Making platform games using platform studio

If you’re seriously interested in creating platform games then you can choose gamemaker,torque 2d as tool to start your game developement. If you’re tight on budget or simply starting up with game development then you can choose platform studio as free alternative.

What is platform studio?

Platform studio is tool that allows you to create platform games like Mario, sonic the hedgehog etc. You can create such games in minutes with platform studio. You can add more features to such games with help of scripting. As gamemaker & torque 2d is commercial tool which requires you to pay for its professional editions.You have to pay nothing for platform studio light edition and you can even distribute your games without any license restriction from platform studio.

Getting started :

You can create new game from blank game option using : File > New

If you want you can start game using New game wizard then click Next, configure the options you want for your game ( you can change those options later as well).

 

 

Right side panel of layer allows you to activate/deactivate layers in game. You can even set the levels in the game. You’ll also find the properties option at the bottom of the right hadn panel which let’s you edit size and many other options. 

If you can’t wait to see the demo on how game works, you can draw bricks and clouds on foreground and add more objects/character from tiles explorer on left hand panel. Then hit the green play button on top navigational bar. This will compile the game and you can see character ready to move forward on your bricks laid on foreground. You can check the actions of character using up-down,left-right arrow keys on keyboard. 

Sprites

You can collect sprites from various free sprite resources available which offers you license free sprites. You can use those sprites inside your game. For starting out you can search for open source game “Hedgewars” and use the spritesheets used in the game.

What about professional edition? 

So far so good, you’ll use platform studio to create games fast and easily. If you’re interested in more customiazation and options then you can upgrade to professional edition. If you’re tight on budget then you can stick with free edition, and still you can create games fast and effectively.
