Review : Tile Studio

For 2D games there is an excellent tool which does the job of tiles and map editing. Tile studio is a program that is combination of both tile and map editor. In this article, we’ll take a look at tile studio features.

What is tile studio?
Tile studio is combination of both tile editor and map editor. It allows you to design graphics and levels. You can’t create complete games with this tool alone but you can export your artwork and tiles/maps for your games.

There is one library which allows you to take benefit of tile studio in your game. It is called as “Clean game library”, with which you can run the levels you’ve created using tile studio.

Features

As you can see in the image below, there are drawing tools at the left sidebar of the application and color selector at the right hand sidebar. In the center you’ve option to design/import your graphics and levels.

Map editor
You can switch from tile editor to map editor with simple keystroke (CTRL+TAB). You can create your tiles first and then you can proceed with the map editor.

File import
It allows you to import (.bmp) files. You can get ready to use image files in .bmp format from sprite reapers sites on the internet.

Animated Sprites
Tile studio can be used to create animated sprites. If you’re using programs like advanced sprite editor then you can skip this feature.

When you done with your tiles then you can generate tile studio definition file (.tsd) and then you can generate your code.
